Background of the Study:
Economic sanctions are widely used as instruments of foreign policy to pressure targeted regimes into policy changes. While intended to alter state behavior, these sanctions often have significant unintended humanitarian impacts, affecting the civilian population through reduced access to essential goods, healthcare, and economic opportunities (Thompson, 2023). This study examines the humanitarian consequences of global economic sanctions by analyzing case studies of targeted regimes and the collateral damage incurred by vulnerable populations. It investigates the mechanisms through which sanctions disrupt local economies, exacerbate poverty, and lead to social instability. The research draws on quantitative data, humanitarian reports, and policy analysis to assess the scale and nature of these adverse effects. It also explores the debate surrounding the ethical implications of sanctions and considers alternative strategies that balance political objectives with humanitarian concerns (Smith, 2024). By evaluating both intended and unintended outcomes, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between economic sanctions and human welfare in the international arena.
Statement of the problem:
Despite the strategic intent behind economic sanctions, there is mounting evidence that they often inflict severe humanitarian harm on civilian populations, undermining the moral authority of sanctioning states (Adekunle, 2023). In many cases, sanctions lead to widespread poverty, shortages of critical supplies, and deterioration of public services. This study aims to evaluate the unintended humanitarian impacts of global sanctions and explore policy measures that could mitigate these adverse effects while maintaining pressure on targeted regimes.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the humanitarian impacts of economic sanctions on civilian populations.
To identify the mechanisms through which sanctions cause unintended harm.
To recommend policy modifications to balance strategic objectives with humanitarian needs.
Research questions:
What are the unintended humanitarian impacts of economic sanctions?
Through what mechanisms do sanctions adversely affect civilian populations?
How can sanctions be redesigned to minimize humanitarian harm?
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it sheds light on the ethical and practical challenges of employing economic sanctions. The findings will inform policymakers and international organizations about alternative approaches that could achieve foreign policy goals while safeguarding human rights and well-being (Johnson, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
